When Beijing Olympics is held in 2008, the expansion project of Pudong airport including its terminal 2, the third runway and west cargo area will be put into operation. Until that time, Pudong airport will be capable of handling 60 million passengers and 4.2 million tons of cargo and mails annually.
Phase II expansion project of Pudong airport began its full-scale in December 2005, which is based on the design concept of "people-oriented".
The expansion project adopts a scientific approach in its construction, to meet the demand for airline companies and airline alliance operation, and stress the "people-oriented, providing conveniences for passengers to the utmost extent". All factors including flow design, layout of facilities, environment, and even transfers on ground transport are taken into consideration.
Three-level structure is adopted for Terminal 2 to facilitate passenger transferring/transiting. From the top to the bottom level is the international departures level (13.6M), the middle level for international arrivals (8.4M) and the mix level for both domestic departures and arrivals (4.2M).
This three-level structure is favorable for airline hub operations, passenger flows, and is more appropriate for Shanghai airport which have the characteristics with more international-to-domestic transfer and alternating the international flight peak hour from domestic flight peak hour; This kind of structure can maximize the efficiency of nearby flight parking position. Passenger transfers can be handled conveniently within the central part of T2. The "mixed level" for domestic departures and arrivals makes it easier for passengers to transfer to other airlines more conveniently.
The main buildings sit in the north zone, with distances between buildings no more than 500 meters, which gather the facilities for ticketing and baggage claim, thus making it very convenient for airline alliance to allocate resources , and greatly reducing transfer time for most passengers.
Transportation center highlighting the concept of integration
In conformity with the concept of "integrative terminal", an "integrated transportation center" will be built between T1 and T2, which provides access to rail transit, maglev train, long distance bus, public bus, taxi, parking space, waiting room, and self-check-in machines counters and shopping space.
The design concept of integrated transportation center is to direct all arriving private vehicles to parking lot, flank the rail transport station with public buses, allow taxi, limousines, VIP vehicles to drop passengers on arriving lanes alongside terminals, let public buses, taxi on departure level park on departing lanes, in order to facilitate passengers' transfer.
The third runway
It is located to the west of the first runway, 3400 meters long, 60 meters wide, class 4F, suitable for the landings and taking off of A380.
West cargo area
West cargo area, totaling 370000 square meters of floor area at its completion, together with its surrounding logistic zone covering 16.8 square kilometers in area, will become the transshipment center for airlines and international logistic giants. West cargo area and Yangshan Deep Water Port will form the multi-form transportation routes connecting to the world.
Five major centers
As Pudong airport has more than one runways and terminals, aiming at world-class airports, AOC, TOC, TMC, UMC, PCC in Pudong airport are set up to boost management efficiency and utilization of resources.
