A total of 12 new civil airports will be built in eastern China by 2020 according to a newly unveiled plan from the East China Civil Aviation Bureau.
These projects will boost the total number for the region, which includes Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Shangdong provinces, to 49 airports.
By 2010, East China will complete expansion projects at Shanghai’s Pudong and Hangzhou airports, start expansion projects at Shanghai Hongqiao, Nanchang, Wuxi and Wenzhou airports, and build new airports in Hefei, Sanming and Yichuan airport.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport will continue as the leading international hub, while the airports of Shanghai Hongqiao, Hangzhou, Xiamen, Nanjing, Fuzhou, Jinan, Qingdao, Nanchang and Hefei will be developed as regional air hubs.
The plans in eastern China will boost the total number of airports in China to 244, up by 97 airports from the total for 2006.
China has now established five major airport regions located in North, East, Mid South, South West and North West of China.
