Plans for a new US$114.28 million (Yuan 800 million) airport for the Chinese city of Chengde have been submitted to the Civil Aviation Administration of China by the Development and Reform Commission of Chengde city.
The city authorities hope to start work on the new facility in 2009 and to open it in 2010. Plans for an airport go back to the 1990s. In 2007, four locations in Shuangfeng Temple, Zhuanshanzi, Xiejiaying and Shangbancheng were chosen as the candidate location for the new airport. The municipal government of Chengde has included these four locations in the plan, which it has submitted to the CAAC for final decision.
Once operational, will support flights to Shijiazhuang, Xi'an, Qinghuangdao, Shenyang, Dalian, Zhangjiajie, Guilin and Huhhot. In time, flights will be added to Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Luoyang, Qingdao, Shanghai, Dunhuang and Kunming.
The airport will feature a 2,600-2,800m runway and cover 133 hectares.
Chengde is in Hebei province, northeast of Beijing. It is best known as the site of the Mountain Resort, a vast imperial garden formerly used by the emperors of the Qing Dynasty. Today the city is a popular tourist destination.
