The final batch of 18 airlines move to Pudong International Airport's new Terminal 2 building today, and passenger services have been beefed up to cope with the extra demand.
From today, there will be 33 airlines operating in Terminal 2 handling 52.6 percent of the airport's daily passenger flights and 43.8 percent of cargo flights, according to the Shanghai Airport Authority.
Jia Ruijun, an authority official, said many efforts have been made to streamline Terminal 2 services, including the recruitment and training of new checkpoint security staff.
Airport operators have also prepared an extra 10 security check-in areas for domestic and international travelers. These areas can be opened during peak times.
Despite the increased staffing and updated facilities, airport officials said Terminal 2 passengers will inevitably face some delays when going through security and boarding procedures as a result of the huge increase in turnover.
Until today, a passenger's average security and check-in waiting time at Terminal 2 was no more than 15 minutes, the officials said.
The national air authority has enacted laws that prohibit travelers from carrying liquid, matches and lighters on planes. The initiatives have slowed boarding procedures at airports.
Jia said that many travelers are still not aware of the new regulations, which hasn't helped the cause.
He said signs detailing the new rules and a list of forbidden goods have been put in prominent positions. Security workers are patrolling boarding areas and relaying the information to passengers.
Airport operators have also told airline companies to notify passengers of the new rules when selling them tickets.
Since Terminal 2 began operations on March 26, it has handled 2,822 flights and 328,000 passengers as of April 22 - about 14 percent of the airport's total turnover in both areas.
In a survey of about 1,200 travelers, more than 92 percent said they were satisfied with services and facilities offered in the new terminal, the airport authority said.
The airport is targeting an annual turnover of 60 million passengers and 4.2 million tons of freight with the new terminal building and the third runway in service.
Terminal 2, the third runway and the west freight zone of the airport opened simultaneously on March 26.
