The revamp and reconstruction of Shanxi province's Taiyuan Wusu International Airport in China has been completed and a government inspection has passed the facility for use as a back-up airport for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The airport will open on 1 July and has been formally approved by the Beijing Organizing Committee, which sets standards for transport facilities associated with the games.
The expansion includes a new 55,000m² terminal and an extension of the runway and taxiway by 400m to 3,600m. The runway and taxiway were also widened and a new parking apron increases the number of aircraft positions to 18.
Taiyuan Wusu's expansion scheme started in March 2006 and it now takes flights direct from major US and European destinations with additional links to Singapore, and Penang and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
