Taipei may increase charter flights
Published: Jul 08, 2008
Taiwan's government is considering increasing the number of direct cross-strait commercial charter flights at the Taipei Songshan Airport, while Dongfang (China Eastern) Airlines is expected to become the first air carrier based in China to open a branch office in Taiwan.

On July 7, the airlines completed their first weekend of direct charter weekend flights across the Taiwan Strait.

The number of Chinese passengers bound for Taiwan is expected to surge on 18 July when the Beijing government allows a maximum of 1,000 tourists to arrive at Taiwan each day.

Tourism industry executives anticipate the daily arrivals limit will be raised after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are concluded in August.
From Taiwan merchants' charter flights in 2003, to Chinese traditional festivals charter flights, and to weekend charter flights which take off on July 4, 2008, China mainland and Taiwan are walking smoothly towards regular direct cross-straits flights.
