At 9:30 a.m. on July 9, 2008, smoke arose from the newly completed A380 hanger of the Beijing Aircraft Maintenance & Engineering Corporation. Ear piercing sirens echoed throughout the hangar's 30,000 square meters as fireman and fire engines entered to deal with the emergency.
The above scenario is an Olympic fire drill by Air China maintenance engineers and technical staff dealing with an aircraft fire inside a hangar. It tests the hangar emergency plan of Air China's maintenance team and is designed to improve the firemen's ability to deal with these types of emergencies. All aspects including the alarm, response time, equipment and vehicles are tested. Emergency fire drills in the newly completed A380 hangar are one of the specific measures Air China has taken in implementing its Olympic security work program.
Air China has placed great importance on Olympic security work and has carried out many training measures in this regard. The engineering technology branch has developed the Olympic Security Work Program and the Ten Measures to Strengthen Olympic Security Work, which will cover air defense, fire prevention and safety, internal security and traffic safety.
As a professional aircraft maintenance company under Air China, the engineering technology branch is responsible for the maintenance, safety and security of Air China aircrafts. In accordance with the strict air defense situation employed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, this branch is carrying out checks and changes to ensure strong security leadership. Various maintenance bases will be called upon in regard to air defense, ground traffic safety and fire prevention and safety. In addition to signing the Liability Letter of Traffic Safety and the Liability Letter for Objectives in Comprehensive Management of Security, Air Defense and Fire Safety, maintenance bases have also signed letters of liability with various workshops and groups, specifying that major leaders of all units are the first person-in-charge for Olympic security work. In this way all responsibility levels of staff are clearly defined.
To develop a variety of contingency plans, the branch carries out its own investigations into potential safety hazards in air defense, fire control, internal security and ground traffic safety. Furthermore, it has strengthened the safe storing of aircrafts in maintenance and enforced a strict system for aircraft reception. Prevention and control capacity for safety has been further enhanced by monitoring of fire prevention facilities and equipment in critical areas to ensure these are always in good condition.
