During the Beijing Olympic Games, dozens of radars were busy searching suspicious targets, dozens of combat aircraft conducted air patrol over the hosting and co-hosting cities day and night, while missiles and flak batteries were on standby. In a word, the PLA Air Force had cast a "protective air net" to ensure a peaceful and serene sky.
According to sources, since it was entrusted with air security mission for the Beijing Olympics, the PLA Air Force has deployed troops and weapons in a scientific way to cast a protective screen in the air. In order to carry out mission-oriented drills, the PLA Air Force worked out commanding procedures and action guidelines for handling possible skyjacking by terrorists, abnormal and special situations in the air, and small low-altitude and low-speed flying targets. At the same time, aviation, radar and land-to-air guided missile units entrusted with air security task meticulously held trainings in light of the pre-plans. An aviation division of the Beijing Military Area Command sent out six fighters to carry out training on how to "force skyjacked aircraft to land", and how to handle small low-altitude and low-speed flying targets, etc. Besides, a flight-testing base of the PLA Air Force worked out 23 schemes and preplans in light of nature and requirements of the Olympic air security missions, and took the initiative to hold joint exercises with local public security departments and medical aid units.
