The Hong Kong and Shenzhen airports will launch new cooperation programs as early as September of this year, aiming to allow more convenient transfers for passengers connecting on flights from the two airports, sources said.

Transit passengers heading to mainland China can get their onward boarding passes and check baggage in Hong Kong before heading to the Shenzhen airport by a direct bus service. The same procedure applies for mainland China passengers arriving at Shenzhen but flying out of Hong Kong.

Earlier reports disclosed that the relevant authorities in Hong Kong and mainland China are in talks on building a dedicated rail link between the Hong Kong and Shenzhen airports. However, no decision has been made on the project.

The cooperation, which commenced on trial operation as early as last August, will not only provide more convenience for passengers and cargos by leveraging on both parties' advantages, but also help to enhance the value of their airline networks, according to industry insiders.

Reports said the strategic alliance between Hong Kong and Shenzhen airports indicates that both sides intended to optimize their own resources, with the Hong Kong airport focusing on exploring international airlines and the Shenzhen airport to develop more airlines domestically.
