Taiwan's train and flight transportation was seriously undermined by powerful typhoon Jangmi, with the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) suspending all the express trains along both western and eastern Taiwan, and quite a few flights being canceled or re-scheduled, according to informed sources.
As Typhoon Jangmi was forecast to land on the eastern part of the island, the TRA announced early yesterday that the express trains along eastern Taiwan would be canceled all day long, while those serving the western Taiwan were suspended from noon to midnight yesterday.
The High Speed Rail operated two non-reserved trains every hour from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and canceled the rest of the scheduled trains after 3:00 p.m.
TRA officials said passengers are allowed to cash tickets unused yesterday within 15 days, while HSR passengers can return unused tickets within one year.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications also suspended collection of tolls for cars using the expressways yesterday.
On another front, almost all domestic flights were canceled yesterday, and quite a few airlines such as China Airlines, Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, and Cathay Pacific Airways canceled some of their flights between Taipei and Hong Kong.
As most airlines will determine whether to cancel or postpone their international flights today, passengers are advised to call airlines to confirm whether their international flights would be normally operated or not.
