On October 23, a large number of specially-chartered planes arrived in Beijing carrying various heads of state attending the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Air China initiated supportive measures in preparation for the rush of landings. Faced with the challenge, Air China staff responded calmly and cooperated smoothly. Having successfully and efficiently completed supportive measures for the inbound rush of special aircraft, Air China won the unanimous praise and recognition of foreign guests.
As the first gathering of leaders of ASEM partners since its second round of expansion, this meeting is unprecedented in terms of scale and standards. Air China is expected to guarantee inbound and outbound support to more than 40 special planes from various countries. Due to the large number of planes, requirements were complicated and very difficult to meet as well as the schedules of inbound and outbound flights being quite intensive and uncertain, this task was even more difficult than the support task carried out during the Olympic Games. The highest intensity of inbound and outbound planes during a single day was even slightly higher than that during the Olympics. To ensure that supportive measures for ASEM special flights were completed safely, Air China made all efforts to ensure full preparation. Besides convening special meetings to discuss deployment of the task, the airline also set up an integrated organizational command system for special plane support with a special plane office as its center. Various departments coordinated actively and cooperated closely, forming an inter-departmental joint cooperation system. As for the mode of operation, Air China followed the modular pattern that had proven effective during the Olympics and the Paralympics, integrating manpower from different departments and dividing the support task into a number of work modules coordinating with each other. In order to implement the support task in an orderly manner as planned, Air China paid particular attention to the collection of information, and checked repeatedly to guarantee accuracy. A detailed support plan was developed on this basis with every detailed enlarged so as to ensure the timely preparation of supportive measures.
On October 21, the specially-designated aircraft carrying Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Beijing, representing the prelude to Air Chin's support task. On October 22, planes carrying other leaders such as the Indonesian President began to arrive. The arrival rush came on October 23, with the successive arrival of special planes carrying the German Chancellor, Bulgarian President, Italian Prime Minister, Indian Prime Minister, during which the shortest arrival interval between landings was less than an hour. According to the support proposal made in advance, Air China support staff at the scene clarified the responsibilities, processes and personnel division. They assumed positions ahead of time, coordinating actively and systematically. On the premise of ensuring support, they managed to achieve "quick entry and rapid exit". The busy scene always returned to quiet within the shortest time possible. Staff working on-site withstood the cold windy weather and worked continuously despite physical fatigue. When faced with emergencies, they responded calmly, reflecting a high degree of professional responsibility and strong comprehensive support capabilities while working in a high-pressure situation. Several foreign principals have expressed sincere praise for the support work of Air China.
It is understood that the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting will come to an end on the 25th of October. On the closing day, most heads of state will leave Beijing, requiring Air China to oversee the rush of outbound flights. It is expected that Air China will take care of outbound supportive measures for special planes carrying leaders from 14 countries.
