Aiming to create a state-owned company to oversee aircraft manufacturing in China, including development of a jumbo aircraft by 2020 to compete with 737s and A320s, Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the newly merged entity of China's two main state-owned aviation manufacturers, AVIC I and AVIC II, officially commenced operation in Beijing on Nov. 8, 2008.
